The California blue whales are believed to be recovering in population to sustainable levels. Researchers have estimated about 2,000 on the eastern side of the Pacific Ocean.<br />

The blue whales have bounced back to about 97% of their historical population. Data from the Soviet regime was kept secret until recently.<br />

Now researchers are able to accurately figure out the numbers lost to whaling and find out the historic population.<br />
<br />
The California blue whales were able to rebound but in other areas like Antarctica the blue whales are only at about 1% of their historic population.<br />
<br />
"California blue whales are recovering because we took actions to stop catches and start monitoring," said Cole Monnahan, "If we hadn't, the population might have been pushed to near extinction - an unfortunate fate suffered by other blue whale populations."<br />

After grieving from the loss of his polar partner, the last polar bear in Africa died Wednesday at a zoo in Johannesburg.<br />
<br />
The Johannesburg Zoo euthanized the 28 year old wang who was suffering from chronic arthritis and liver failure.<br />

He lost his polar partner in January 2014 who was taken by a heart  attack. Now walking around listless and refusing food.<br />
<br />
In an attempt to help him minimize the pain of his heartbreak and in the hope he could eat and improve his health, he was given special treats and showered with toys.<br />
<br />
On Valentine's Day 2014, Wang was given a box filled with fruit and meat, and highlighted with love hearts and a note that said, "We Love You Wang!"<br />
<br />
Polar bear reproduction is stimulated by cold weather, the bears Wang and GeeBee did not breed because they where raised in warm captivity since they where cubs.<br />
<br />
According to the zoo there are no plans to replace the animals.<br />

An experimental engine could introduce a new era of space travel — it only had to break a law of physics to do so. An EmDrive uses electricity to generate microwaves, which then bounce around in a closed space and generate thrust. The force generated by the drive is not particularly strong, but the implications are big. Multiple independent experiments have now replicated the drive's ability to generate thrust, albeit with varying success. Using panels to convert solar energy into electricity and then into thrust, opens the door to perpetual space travel fueled by the stars.<br />

Scientists were slow to warm up to the EmDrive since it violates the law of the conservation of momentum. In addition to not being sure why it works — current theories rely on quantum mechanics — scientists also have some pretty good ideas why it shouldn't work.<br />
<br />
The law of the conservation of momentum is pretty important. It says that you can't create or destroy momentum. The momentum of two objects that collide is equal before and after the impact. Space travel relies on this principle. A typical rocket engine or thruster uses propellant that it blasts out to create an opposing force.<br />
<br />
The Emdrive appears to have found a loophole. It is, in some sense, creating an unbalanced equation of momentum.<br />
<br />
The engine's inventor, Roger Shawyer, and his company, SPR Ltd., have been working on this for more than a decade with little fanfare. Shawyer's science had been roundly criticized, although no one seemed to be able to prove that it didn't work.<br />
<br />
Slowly, the scientific community has come around. Last year, Chinese scientists replicated it. Now, NASA has done it, too, with the help of U.S. scientist Guido Fetta, who has built his own thruster similar to the Emdrive. A new paper on an eight-day test completed in August 2013 describes the dynamic as "a force that is not attributable to any classical electromagnetic phenomenon, and therefore is potentially demonstrating an interaction with the quantum vacuum virtual plasma." More tests are planned.<br />

Potential applications of the technology vary, from replacing propellant thrusters on satellites, thereby reducing the cost and difficulty of operating, to providing sustainable thrust on deep space missions, resulting in a trip to Mars taking just "weeks rather than months," according to Wired.<br />

According to a report published by Occupational and Environmental Medical which concluded shift work can increase their chances of developing type 2 diabetes. 42 percent of people working as shifts workers were found to have increased risk of developing diabetes with those most affected being men and individuals on rotating shifts.<br />

According to the 2010 National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Survey, 29 percent of  all workers in the United States worked an alternate shift – or shifts other than a typical day shift.<br />

Alternate shifts are known to disrupt the body’s biological rhythm. The biological clock is responsible for the release of hormones and also controls mood, alertness, body temperature and other components of the body’s daily cycle.<br />
<br />
Working alternate shifts has previously been associated with certain health risks including heart disease, breast cancer, and obesity. In the present study, the authors note that previous observations between shift work and diabetes have been inconsistent. Therefore, they conducted a systematic review of the literature to quantify the risk that working alternate shifts presents.<br />
<br />
For the study, researchers at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China looked at 12 previously completed studies, which held data on 226,652 people. That data included where the people worked, their BMI levels, and if diabetes runs in their families.<br />
<br />
In the end, the researchers concluded that type 2 diabetes is more prevalent among those who work in shifts. Workers that have rotating nighttime and daytime shifts have an increased risk of 42 percent. Men alone have a risk increase of 35 percent.<br />
<br />
The authors suggest that fluctuating levels of the male hormone testosterone could account for the increased risk for men, noting that low testosterone levels have been implicated in insulin resistance and diabetes.<br />
<br />
According to the authors, these new findings should urge those who work in shifts to be more aware of the associated risks.<br />

"Over the past two months, we've begun to share our plans for the current year and beyond," says Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians developer 343 Industries in a blog post on Halo Waypoint, "We started to announce new characters, vehicles, and re-mastered maps. In the near future, we'll have more to share on everything from Halo: The Master Chief Collection to Halo: Nightfall, and more. We know you're anxiously awaiting more details on these projects, and it just so happens that we'll have new info to share with you quite soon. The next stop for the Halo team is sunny San Diego for the world famous Comic-Con INTERNATIONAL."<br />

343 goes on to reveal it has "dedicated panels" planned for each project. The panel for Halo: Nightfall, the live-action digital series from 343 Industries and Scott Free Productions (that's Ridley Scott's production COMPANY, by the way) will give first details on story and production, and screen a short video tease. The panel will be attended by 343's Kiki Wolfkill and Frank O'Connor, as well as key Halo: Nightfall cast and crew, though there's no mention of whether Scott is included in this number. The panel takes place next Thursday, 24th July, from 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m PDT.<br />

The Halo: The Master Chief Collection panel, meanwhile, will gather 343 Industries' Senior Producer Dennis Ries, Franchise DIRECTOR Frank O'Connor, Certain Affinity's President and original Halo 2 multiplayer and online design lead Max Hoberman, and "other guests" together for an "in-depth conversation" about the upcoming compilation and to discuss "the efforts being made to bring the story of the Master Chief and Halo's legendary multiplayer to a new generation." This takes place on Friday 25th July, from 10:15 am PDT till 11:15 am. 343 says that the panels will not be live-streamed, but they will be recorded and posted to YouTube and Waypoint over the weekend.<br />

The cost of strengthening the city will be astronomical. Even as he calls for more intelligent development, Pinsky says that New York is unlikely to take a drastic approach to dealing with storm surge and sea-level rise. “Retreating from the coastline of New York city both will not be necessary and is not really possible,” he says.<br />

Given the sheer scale of development along the coast, it is hard to argue with Pinsky's assessment. But many climate scientists fear that bolstering coastal developments only delays the eventual reckoning and increases the likelihood of future disasters. The oceans will rise well into the future, they say, so cities will eventually be forced to accommodate the water.<br />

“I don't see anything yet that looks towards long-term solutions,” says Klaus Jacob, a geoscientist at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, New York. But Jacob admits that he is as guilty as anyone. In 2003, he and his wife bought a home in a low-lying area on the Hudson River in Piermont, New York. Although it went against his professional principles, he agreed to the purchase with the assumption that he could elevate the house. But height-restriction laws prevented him from doing so, and Sandy flooded the house. The couple are now rebuilding.<br />
<br />
“In a way, I think I was in denial about the risk,” Jacob says. He hopes that a new application to raise the house will be approved, but he still fears that the neighbourhood will not survive sea-level rise at the end of the century. New Yorkers and coastal residents everywhere would be wise to learn that lesson. “Ultimately,” Jacob says, “we all have to move together to higher ground.”<br />

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, June 6, 2014) -- Staff Sgt. Arthur Guest played a unique but crucial role in securing the beachhead from enemy aircraft during the D-Day invasion at Normandy, France, June 6, 1944 and the days and months that followed.<br />
<br />
To do that, he and the two Soldiers he commanded launched a helium balloon.<br />
<br />
While helium balloons today are popular at birthday parties, Guest's balloon was no small party balloon.<br />
<br />
The purpose of the balloon, he said, was to stop German aircraft from swooping in low and strafing the men and supplies on the beach, as they prepared to move inland.<br />
<br />
While a balloon might seem fairly innocuous, if an aircraft ever hit the cable holding it up, it would shear the wing off, he said.<br />
<br />
One of his men also manned an antiaircraft gun for good measure, he said, and it was used, especially at night when enemy aircraft flew just above the balloons, which hovered at about 2,000 feet.<br />
<br />
With balloons like his all up and down the coast, this made enemy aircraft attacks significantly less effective as they had to drop their payload from a much higher altitude and could not get the accuracy they needed had they been able to come in low.<br />
<br />
One of the most dangerous moments of the war, the 93-year-old veteran recalled, was during the landings at Omaha Beach when they had to wade ashore with their heavy packs and hold their rifles over their heads, hoping they wouldn't drown.<br />
<br />
The heavily-laden, flat-bottom landing craft couldn't make it all the way to the beach since they bottomed out, he explained.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, he said, they landed a few hours after the initial landings. By that time, the Soldiers had pushed the German defenders back far enough to where the landings were relatively unopposed.<br />
<br />
Before they got the balloon filled with helium, they had to secure the cable to the ground with stakes so it wouldn't take off. For good measure, they added explosive charges to the balloon so that it would blow up an aircraft even if the cable didn't shear a wing. A winch was used to lower and raise the balloon during stormy weather.<br />
<br />
He said the entire balloon system was pretty "peculiar."<br />
<br />
Guest and his two-man team remained on the beach until November 1944, when he said President Eisenhower ordered them home and declared the mission a success.<br />
<br />
If Guest's balloon system was pretty peculiar, so was his unit.<br />
<br />
The 320th Very Low Altitude Barrage Balloon Battalion was made up entirely of African-American Soldiers, except for the commander.<br />
<br />
It distinguished itself as the first all-African American unit to take part in the invasion of France.<br />
<br />
The military at the time was still segregated, as was Guest's hometown of Charleston, S.C., where he grew up.<br />
<br />
But despite living under those conditions, Guest said that on Dec. 7, 1941, when he heard Pearl Harbor had been attacked on the radio, he felt it was an attack on all Americans, irrespective of race or anything else.<br />
<br />
"I remember real well when they did that dirty trick," he said of the attack. At the time, Guest was a laborer in the Charleston Navy Yard, and he knew immediately on that Sunday that his world had changed forever.<br />
<br />
In 1942, Guest was drafted within days of the attack and shipped to Camp Tyson, Tenn., where he learned the balloon trade. He arrived in January and recalled it being bitterly cold.<br />
<br />
Once his training was completed, he and others of the 320th were shipped to England, where they remained from November 1943 to June 1944, right before the landings.<br />
<br />
The Army kept them busy cleaning weapons and doing physical training. There was very little time for liberty, but the few times there were, Guest said the English treated him and his fellow Soldiers "hospitably."<br />
<br />
But the busy work was getting on their nerves and the men were actually looking forward to D-Day, he recalled.<br />
<br />
As to the landings and the aftermath, Guest said there was no room for fear. He had a job to do and men to look after and there was no place for those kinds of feelings.<br />
<br />
Not until Guest returned to the States in November 1944, did the fear finally hit him.<br />
<br />
"You wonder how you went through it," he said. It was like waking up after a nightmare and realizing, "Lord, it really happened."<br />
<br />
Although Guest kept his emotions under control during the war, there was one he could not; his love for Marthena, his fiancé.<br />
<br />
"I kept her picture close to my heart at all times and while in the foxholes," he said.<br />
<br />
Upon his return stateside, Guest said the 320th did jungle training, in preparation for the invasion of mainland Japan, which fortunately never happened, he said.<br />
<br />
The year 1945 was a good year, he said. The war was over and that's the year he married Marthena.<br />
