California Blue Whales Come Back

The California blue whales are believed to be recovering in population to sustainable levels. Researchers have estimated about 2,000 on the eastern side of the Pacific Ocean.

The blue whales have bounced back to about 97% of their historical population. Data from the Soviet regime was kept secret until recently.

Now researchers are able to accurately figure out the numbers lost to whaling and find out the historic population.

The California blue whales were able to rebound but in other areas like Antarctica the blue whales are only at about 1% of their historic population.

"California blue whales are recovering because we took actions to stop catches and start monitoring," said Cole Monnahan, "If we hadn't, the population might have been pushed to near extinction - an unfortunate fate suffered by other blue whale populations."
